Well readers 2010 proffered up two such monumentally massive singles that I cannot decide between them for best song of the year. Like two sides of the same coin – All The Lovers’ heads to Dancing On My Own’s tails – kylie and Robyn dragged us to dancefloor this year with an urgency that borders insanity.
All The Lovers is the glass-half-full optimist in this duo of dancefloor deliciousness. Describing All The Lovers euphoric is akin to calling salt salty; it’s a song that defines what “euphoric” should mean in aural terms. Like Zoloft for the ears, All The Lovers is inescapable, unapologetic and life-affirming. The way it grows throughout and eventually builds to a massive crescendo… I really can’t put into words how much I love this song. It’s a work of art.
Robyn’s Dancing On My Own on the other hand bubbles over with pathos and defines a subgenre of music – championed by Robyn among others – that has come to be described as “heartbreak disco.” Every stuttering, shimmering second of Dancing On My Own is filled with such heartbreaking sincerity that you can’t help but feel each word through blurry eyes as you make the dancefloor your own.
