so a new tv show started tonight on bbc in england called ‘beautiful people.’ i’m not going to lie, the only reason i actually found out about it was because people on the popjustice forum were banging on about how fantastically gay the soundtrack is. but beyond it being fantastic (and gay) i noticed to my surprise and delight that it features a cover of dolly parton’s classic ‘jolene’ by none other that sophie ellis-bextor. furthermore the soundtrack features a duet of ‘the winner takes it all’ by the minogue sisters. just from this information you would have to guess it’s going to be the gayest show in the history of time. and you wouldn’t be that far off.
the show is very good. it’s not perfect, and on occasion the over the top moments don’t quite pull off but in general it’s fantastic. and the music is amazing all the way through – mostly late 90s as the flashbacks are set in 1997.
the idea is a grown gay living in new york with his partner looking back at his childhood with his very enjoyable family and best friend kyl(i)e. the pilot focused on a vase that featured in the present day storyline and how it came to be in his possession, which was very tangential to the whole plot but i liked that.
the funniest moment in the whole episode is when the mum, debbie, has given up alcohol in a bet with her son and therefore is trying to invent ‘zany’ games for them to play. these include watching her put on a bracelet while dancing to baccarat, playing with a self-adhesive envelope, and guessing who is in the laundry basket (pictured below) to which the blind aunt notes from the couch ‘debs, even i can tell you’re making a tit of yourself.’
fantastic.
also, job creation etc etc. i hate sarah palin.
